HISTORY: http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Clara_Oswald
PERSONALITY: At first glance, Clara might seem like a difficult person to get to know. She's brash, she's very direct, it takes her a little bit to warm up to a person and open up to them. She holds people at arm's length just at first, until she can figure out what kind of person they are.
Once she's gotten to know someone a little bit, she comes out of that initial reserved stance and shows she is a very friendly person. She tends to tease the people she likes, out of affection, giving them nicknames or pretending to give them a hard time about things. It isn't that she's lacking in warmth, or uncaring; these things are sometimes a little difficult for her, and she keeps that little bit of distance, keeps things light, rather than get bogged down in emotions, especially at first.
When she has decided you're her friend, she is as loyal and protective as they come. She will put you first if she cares about you. She was planning to travel the world, but when a family friend died, she set aside her travel plans to become a nanny to the family's two children, so they wouldn't be so alone. She gave her life once to save the Doctor, stepping into his time stream and being scattered all through his life, echoes of herself, though he was able to save her once she'd saved him.
She has an innate curiosity about the world around her (and, eventually, the other worlds and times she visited with the Doctor). She yearned, from a young age, to travel the world and see all there was to see. She's very open to new experiences, diving in feet first.
She is something of a natural leader, between being very clear on what she wants, being unafraid to voice her opinions, and being totally willing to stand up for other people. She once stepped in and took charge of a group of soldiers on a remote planet during a crisis; she was a firm but loving guide with the two children she helped care for; and she eventually became a school teacher.
She is courageous, too, never afraid to back down from a serious or dangerous situation, especially if she can help. She can be impulsive; as time passed this grew to the point of even being reckless. She has at times shown herself capable of manipulating people a bit, lying to her boyfriend or the Doctor to get things to go her way. But she always does these things out of the purest of intentions: to keep people safe, to keep her freedom.
She comes across as a very tough cookie, and that's not incorrect. But she can be tender, too, vulnerable, human. She fell in love with a fellow teacher at her school, and began to build a happy and loving life with him despite her other life as a time traveler. When he was killed during one of their adventures she was absolutely gutted.
Her compassion and her big heart especially come through when she can do something to help someone else, help ease someone's pain or save them from danger or stand up for them--especially if they cannot stand up for themselves. In one of her first adventures with the Doctor, they faced an ancient creature that fed on memories. In order to help save a planet she'd only been on for a day, Clara gave up an item with immense personal value to her, and shared the memory of her deceased mother, just to keep the people on the planet safe. She has dived fearlessly time and time again into situations where she thought she could help, where she could save someone else.
Her grief over not being able to save her boyfriend, and her somewhat changed relationship to the Doctor after his regeneration, led her to try to emulate him more. In her eyes, he was an infallible hero, someone who always saved the day, always had an answer or a way out. In doing so she became more reckless, jumping into things or making swift decisions without worrying about the outcome because she was going to be like the Doctor and the Doctor always won in the end.
Her recent death in the series highlighted all the various facets of her character. She answered a call for help from one of her students without hesitation, because he had asked, and she was confident she and the Doctor could get to the bottom of the mystery. When it turned out her student had been marked for death with a tattoo that counted down the moments he had left to live, she insisted he transfer the mark to her, so that he could be safe, and they could buy some time to figure out a solution. She was loyal to her friend, protective of someone who couldn't help himself.
She unwittingly rewrote the terms of the curse by taking it on herself; in the end nothing could be done to save her. She had taken the curse on without hesitation, having absolute faith the Doctor could get her out of it. When he couldn't, she shared a tearful farewell with him (but did not allow him to say certain things he wanted to, apparently "I love you", saying she already knew, again holding serious emotion at bay). She showed him compassion by insisting he not blame himself or try to avenge her; she sacrificed herself to save another person; she faced her death head-on, unflinching.
